Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for an extended period when multiple of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights affecting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a method that is especially affected by weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that such operations become unprofitable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the region.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
